Tip of a Pen Successfully Removed From 7 Year Old’s Lungs at Rajagii Hospital

Doctors at Rajagiri Hospital successfully removed a foreign body identified as a pen tip from a 7 year old boys lungs without intervention of surgery. The 7 year old child, native of Idukki district was referred to Rajagiri Hospital for advanced treatment from a local clinic for treating his persistent cough. The child was sufferring from undiagnosed cough and uneasiness for nearly a month following which he was shown to a local hospital. Due to persistent cough, the patient was referred to Dr Rajesh V, HOD & Sr. Consultant, Pulmonology at Rajagiri Hospital. Upon speaking with the boy, he didn’t mention anything that he swallowed recently. Dr Rajesh upon conducting an Xray had certain doubts on foreign body in the lung, for confirming the same he did a CT Scan evaluation, foreign body was identified in left lung of the patient.

The treatment was led by Dr Rajesh V HOD & Sr. Consultant, Pulmonology at Rajagiri Hospital & Dr Ahamed Kabeer, Consultant Pediatric Surgeon. Dr Ahamed Kabeer took out the foreign body identified as a pen cap from the lungs using rigid bronchoscopy. The team was supported by doctors from Anesthesiology comprising Dr Sachin George and Dr Shilpa Jose. The pen cap was taken our with a procedure called Rigid Bronchoscopy.
