CPO Ajeesh Paul Discharged from Rajagiri Hospital

The policeman who was assaulted in Idukki district while carrying out checks during the lockdown was discharged yesterday from Rajagiri Hospital after successful treatment. On June 1, 38-year-old CPO Ajeesh Paul and the station house officer (SHO) C R Ratheesh of Marayur Police Station, Idukki district were attacked by a man for questioning for not wearing mask. Mr Ratheesh had sustained minor injuries and CPO Ajeesh Paul had severe traumatic head injury with fracture of skull and intracranial haemorrhage (Left parieto-temporal bone comminuted displaced fracture, left acute subdural haemorrhage, left temporo-parietal contrusion). They were immediately shifted to Rajagiri Hospital for further management from a local Hospital at Adimali after first aid. The initial challenge of the Neurosurgery team led by Dr Jagath Lal Gangadharan, Dr Joe Marshal Leo and Dr Manoj Narayana Panicker was to sustain Ajeesh Paul’s life.

He underwent an emergency left frontotemporoparietal decompressive craniectomy and evacuation of subdural hematoma, removal of displaced fractured fragments, lax duroplasty and placement of remaining bone flap in right anterior abdominal wall under general anaesthesia on 01.06.2021. Post operatively for a few days he was on support of mechanical ventilator, and underwent intensive medical management.

As he had sustained severe traumatic injury in left side of the brain, it had impaired his speech centre which is associated with speech production and articulation. Our ability to articulate ideas, as well as usage of words accurately in spoken and written language, has been attributed to this crucial area.

He was weaned off from ventilator and shifted out from ICU after four days of his surgery following an improved neurological status. His Rehabilitation started once he was shifted to room which included Speech therapy and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation to address his speech impairment and movement of arms and legs. On the initial days he was unable to speak and understand things and slowly with speech therapy he almost regained his ability to speak and understand things to an extent. The doctors said that he needs to undergo Speech therapy for six more months.

Shri P Rajeev, Minister for Industries, Kerala visited Ajeesh at Rajagiri Hospital, he lauded the efforts of medical team treating Ajeesh and thanked colleagues and Police Association heads who stood with him during the tough times. Police Association members Shri KP Praveen, Shri Ajith, Shri Manoj Kumar, Shri Binoy, Shri Shiju and Shri Harikrishnan thanked the management and medical team of Rajagiri and also conveyed their gratitude to State Government who bore the medical expenses of Ajeesh.

Neurosurgery team led by Dr Jagath Lal Gangadharan, Dr Joe Marshal Leo, Dr Manoj Narayana Panicker; Anaesthesiology team led by Dr Sachin George, Dr Vivek T Menachery; Dr Remya Mathew from Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Speech Therapist Ms. Sara Paul and Physiotherapist Mr Abhilash Mathew were involved in the treatment of Ajeesh.
